The rainbow connection

When Noah had walked into his apartment that evening, ready to crash onto the first available surface in the small space, he had not been expecting a visitor. On top of the small kitchen table sat a toy frog. No, it was too lifelike to be a toy. He could see the leopard-like spots covering its small body, the creamy white of its stomach. He could see the glisten of moisture on its back and the way its chest rose and fell as if it were breathing. He blinked. The small creature blinked back.

Noah startled and backed away from the frog.

“What is that doing in the apartment?”

“His name is Kermit and I kinda need him to stay here for a bit.” Noah jumped again and looked to where Parker was, bent over the Chance's kitchen counter eating a bowl of cereal. Now he had two unexpected visitors.

“First of all: How did you get into my apartment? Second of all: No way! This apartment is disgusting enough as it is.”

“That’s exactly why he should live here!”

“No! It’s not! We don’t need to make it worse by having a frog here.”

“But my parents won’t let me keep him. And since you don’t really have anyone telling you no-"

“Hey!” Noah exclaimed.

“I’m telling him no.” Seth, one moment nowhere to be seen, the next protesting the addition to the decaying apartment.

“You do not get a say in this. You are dead.” Noah said pointedly at Seth.

“Wait, is Seth here now?” Parker looked around, as if expecting to see Noah’s brother. He didn’t.

"Hi Parker." Seth said, ignoring Noah's comment.

“Yes. He says hi. And while we’re on the subject of dead people and problems, I told someone else in the building that I can see dead people. I didn’t mean to. It was on the roof and there were all these orange flowers and a pool and a man whose last name is Stars and it just kinda came out.”

“Huh, weird.”

“It gets weirder. More weird? I don’t know. Anyways, I also met Stephanie Lovett-”

“My mom says she’s ‘an odd one’.”

“She didn’t seem that odd considering,” Noah gestures to himself, “Anyways, we found a polaroid of Mr. Evans with a phone number written on it, and I wanted to stay and help but really I didn’t. I mean, too much weird stuff has been happening-”

“Besides seeing dead people?”

“Yes, besides seeing dead people.”

“So…” Parker paused before asking, “What are you going to do?”

“Absolutely nothing. Just because I can see ghosts doesn’t mean I want to be dragged into this whole Mr. Evans thing. I mean, the woman on the roof said she can bring dead things back to life! That’s crazy. I don’t want to mess with that. I’m fine. No thank you.”

Kermit croaked.

“And get that frog out of my apartment.”
